Sólstafir – the Autumn Tour

In Cracow, the only gig in Poland, the band gathered a room full of people, who knew not only the titles of all their songs but also all the lyrics. The interactions between the band and the audience were phenomenal! It created an amazing atmosphere! It turns out that not only Sigur Rós or Kaleo can sell out a concert a few weeks in advance. Sólstafir is the undisputed star of Icelandic music abroad. Happily, I went for my first meeting with the band – and it will certainly not be the last! Warm-up Before discussing the headliner, I must pay homage to those who opened the show in Cracow. Words by Wim Van Hooste The latest release by Sólstafir, Berdreyminn (The dreamer of forthcoming events), is the band’s sixth release in 15 years. On the previous releases, Í Blóði og Anda (2002), Masterpiece of Bitterness (2005), Köld (2009), Svartir Sandar (2011), and Ótta (2014), they ignored all genre borders, both metal and mental ones, and pushed the boundaries. The album was produced by Birgir Birgisson (Sigur Rós, Alcest) and Jaime Gomez Arellano (Ghost, Paradise Lost, Oranssi Pazuzu) at the former swimming pool Sundlaugin on the borders of Reykjavík. 9 drops of sound of March

Slow down for a second and give a try to 9 new Icelandic songs that were released in March. What happened then, you would ask. HAM comes back with new single Vestur Berlín. Sólstafir revealed another single from the up-coming album entitled Bláfjall. Low Roar recorded a song with JFDR called Bones. Sin Fang, Örvar Smárason and Sóley presented another part of their monthly collaboration – Wasted. Ösp Eldjarn´s debut album is out and you can enjoy soothing sounds of Bak við fossinn. We got more details about the sound of Ásgeir´s new album thanks to Stardust. Amabadama announced a new song Ganga á eftir þér. Blakkat unveils new album so listen to Calling Suzie. Eistnaflug 2015

Today it seems like Eistnaflug reality was actually in some other dimension long time ago. But it happened. So far, it’s my third festival season in Iceland and in a state of peace of mind I can tell you I’m satisfied for the rest of 2015. Finally, I´d observed the most famous Icelandic metal festival for a few years. It´d been rather like licking candy through the wrapper. So I packed my backpack and tent and went to the small fjord in eastern Iceland with a town called Neskaupstaður that has a population of 1500 people. The amount of festivalgoers this year reached up to 3000. We are powerful, aren’t we? (more…)
